Capturing of the Slaves
How Slave Trade Began
Before African slave trade began, Europeans attempted to use Native Americans as a work force. That didn't work well because the Natives knew the area better then the Europeans so they could escape and bring back more people to fight. They continued to look for people that could work for them. Europeans attempted to use other Europeans as a work force, but they weren't used to the heat and diseases so they often died from being outside and working all day. The Portuguese discovered that Africans were great workers, the only problem was that they didn't want to work. This lead to a new business, people could capture and sell Africans as slaves. Many Africans died on the ships sailing to wherever they were being shipped to. The slave trade was horrible, it ripped families apart. You would go hunting for food and when you came home you might discover all you family missing. It was cruel. The slave traders had to capture the slaves mentally and physically. They knew that if they just took the Africans they would fight back because they had something to hold on to, the hope of escaping and getting back to their family and friends. But if the slave traders killed the Africans friends and family then they had captured them mentally, they had nothing to hold on to so they often lost hope and gave up. If this was the case, which it often was then the capturers had won. The slave traders were always one step ahead of the Africans because often times they knew what was going to happen next, and they were smart about it. They made sure to kill everyone in they African village, not just so they could kill the Africans mentally, but to make sure that neighboring tribes didn't find out what happened. If they didn't kill everyone in the village then the survivors would tell other tribes the story making it much harder for the Africans to be captured because they would be prepared. Once they captured the Africans they chained them up to make sure they didn't try to escape. They also made sure that they had a gun or another weapon on them at all times so the Africans wouldn't try to do anything that might irritate the whites. The slave traders had to be smart, they always had to be one step ahead to be successful.
