Isabelle Portage was born on July 14th, 1707. Her parents were both very wealthy. They were slave owners. She grew up getting everything she wanted. Isabelle did not like slavery at all. Sometimes she would bring the slaves extra food at night because they were always very hungry. The slaves greatly appreciated that. Sometimes Isabelle would go play with the little slave children. Her parents did not like when she did that, if she got caught she was always in big trouble. Her parents didn’t want her playing with the slaves.
Isabelle went to school and learned how to read and how to write. She liked knowing how to read. Sometimes at night, she would go teach the slaves how to read and write even though she knew she would get in very big trouble if she got caught. Her parents never found out what she did for the slaves. The slaves were very grateful. Isabelle was a very kind hearted young girl.
When she was about 17 she met a man named Hunter. He was very handsome and Isabelle really loved him. But, her father did not like him and did not allow Isabelle to marry him. Her father matched her up with a man named Percival, Percival Derby. She did not really like Percival, but her father made her marry him anyway. However, Isabelle met a man named Noah, who was a slave on the Derby plantation. She instantly fell in love with him. Sometimes at night, they would meet to talk while Mr. Derby was sleeping. One night they were feeling really in love. They decided to make a baby. A few weeks later, Isabelle told Percival that she was pregnant. Percival was very happy. But, what Percival didn’t know that it wasn’t his baby she was pregnant with, it was Noahs.
Isabelle was still very kind to the slaves, she cared a lot about them. She cringed whenever they were whipped, she felt really bad for them. Sometimes she would bring them extra food if she had any left over. She still met Noah at night. Isabelle was so afraid that the baby would be a black baby, instead of a white one. She didn’t know what she would do. She figured that she would be killed, and Noah. She was very scared.
Finally, after nine long months, the baby came. Odds are it would be a black baby and it was. Isabelle was sleeping when Mr. Derby wanted to see the baby. Teenie told him that the baby was a stillbirth and that they had buried her already. They actually gave the baby to one of the slaves who had just had a baby and still had milk the baby could breastfeed off of. Clay, her step son came and gave the baby and Noah to Mr. Derby. He was so furious that he shot the baby and Noah right on the spot. Isabelle felt like her heart had been stabbed she was so sad. She weeped and she wished that she was the one that was shot instead of her child and Noah. Mr. Derby also decided that he was going to sell two of his slaves and his indentured servant, Tidbit, Myna and Polly.
A few days later, Mr. Derby sent Clay to go find the doctor who he sent to sell the slaves and indentured servant. Percival was very ill and died later that day of unknown causes. Clay never returned. Isabelle set all of the slaves free and she hit the road herself. She wanted to find Hunter, her first love. After about two months on the road, she found him. She was delighted when she found out that he hadn’t married anyone yet and he proposed to her right then and there. They got married and had 2 kids, Bella and Louie. Isabelle died when she was 39 of natural causes.
