Tidbit was born a slave just like his mother. His father was sold a few days after he was born. He was treated very poorly. That all sounds like a pretty bad life for him but there were some good things that happened. His mother was the cook so he didn't have to worry about being hungry. Also he liked helping his mom, she never whipped him nor was unkind to him. What he didn't like about his life was that his master was so mean to him mother. He would yell at her which frightened Tidbit. Tidbit did not like seeing his mother upset
A few years later two girls older than Tidbit came to work with his momma. Their names were Amari and Polly. Tidbit quickly became friends with both of them. He liked having someone around to play with, before he was with just his mother who was always busy cooking. He played tag with the girls and had a lot of fun with them. One day Mr. Derby came and told him that he was going to be alligator bait. He did not like this idea at all. What if he drowned or the alligators got to him before his little legs could swim back to shore? Tidbit did as Mr. Derby said, got in the water and was bait even though he didn't want to at all. He ended up fine, just very scared.
One of the worst days of Tidbit's life was when he was taken away from his mother. He didn't understand why so he cried for long periods of time. It didn't make it any better that he had to walk many miles at a time when he was used to being sleeping. He didn't have much food but Myna and Polly made sure he was safe. He walked for about two months, hoping that soon he would be able to stop and rest. Finally, they came to a place called Fort Mose. Fort Mose was a place where escaped slaves come to live. When they got there, Tidbit was fed and put to sleep. He slept for 2 days straight. When he woke up Amari told him that he was going go to school and learn how to read and write. He was very happy. The next few years he went to school and he lived with Amari.
When he was 15 he met a girl named Kimari. He fell in love with her and married her. They had four children together named Maria, Elizabeth, Charles and Daniel. Tidbit grew up to be a cook, just like his mother. He hoped that one day his mother would come back and find him, but she never did. He often told his children stories about his life as a slave and how he escaped. They were very fascinated by his stories. Tidbit lived a long happy life. He died at age 41 of natural causes.
