Percival Derby was a young man, the son of Timothy Derby. He was a slave owner. His father said when he got old and died, that he would pass the Derbyshire Farm over to him. Percival was very happy to hear that, because he wanted to be like his father. When Percival was 17, he was given his own slave, Catherine. Catherine was a beautiful young girl, but soon, she would be very beat up. Mr. Derby raped her and one day she became pregnant. She had her baby, but Percival wanted nothing to do with it. The baby was shot right on the spot along with Catherine. He was yes indeed, a very evil man.
When Percival was nineteen, his father passed away. Percival was now in charge of the Derbyshire Farm! He married a wonderful women named Harriet and had one child with her. They named him Clay. Clay was a young boy to be proud of. He took after his father and would one day become the owner of the Derbyshire farm. He did just as his Mr. Derby said. Clay was a very good son.
A few years later, Harriet Derby fell ill with Typhoid fever. The doctor came, but it was too late. Harriet passed away a week later. Mr. Derby mourned her death for a long time. He had loved her more than anyone else in the world. But, he couldn’t think of the past, he had a big future ahead of him.
Clay was now fifteen and Mr. Derby had found another beautiful women. Her name was Isabel, Isabel Potter. He married her and soon was going to have a baby with her. He was very happy to have married Isabel, she was a very kind and generous women. We was going to spend the rest of his life with her. Clay was turning sixteen and Mr. Derby wanted to buy some new slaves, so he thought, why not get Clay a slave for his birthday? He went into town and bought an indentured servant for himself and a slave girl for Clay. Clay was very happy with his gift. He named her Myna. Polly was the indentured servant’s name. Mr. Derby told Teenie, the cook, to show them to where they would be staying. Polly and Myna seemed to be adjusting just fine.
Some days Mr. Derby would come to check on Teenie, Tidbit, Polly and Myna. They were doing just as they said. Mr. Derby was very happy that they were following his directions. One day, he sat down to eat dinner and he saw Myna and Polly dressed as maids serving him. He was very appalled by it, but he tried to ignore them and eat his meal as normal. At the end of the meal, Myna was bringing him pie, but she accidentally dropped the plate. He was so angry, he whipped her multiple times. He didn’t feel bad at all nor thought he did anything wrong.
His wife Isabelle Derby, had a baby that was due soon. One day, she knew it was the day. She was going to have her baby. Mr. Derby called Myna and Polly up to the big house to help Mrs. Derby while he was getting the doctor. Mr. Derby went to get the doctor and when he got back, they said that Mrs. Derby had her baby and it was a stillborn. They said that they had already buried it because Mrs. Derby couldn’t stand to look at her dead baby anymore. He wanted to see the baby. Clay brought Noah and a newborn baby up to him and asked, “Is this what you're looking for?” Percival was so furious he shot the baby and Noah right there and then. Also he decided he is going to sell Tidbit as a punishment for Teenie and Myna and Polly as well. He was going to send the doctor and Clay.
That night, his nightly wine tasted a little funny, but he drank it anyways. The next morning Clay didn’t feel good so he just sent the doctor to sell the slaves. The doctor did as he was told and took them. Later that day, Mr. Derby felt quite faint. He passed out and found himself laying in his bed. He died the next day. The real cause for his death was unknown, but some people think he was poisoned.
